Sprinkle Rice Krispy Treats – Gooey rice krispie treats that have extra butter, addition of sprinkles, miniature marshmallows, and white chocolate! They are extra gooey and absolutely delicious!
Rice Krispie treats are a top-tier dessert. They can be a little basic, but there is so much room to work as a recipe developer and really expand the original recipe! Lucky for you, that is exactly what I did with this recipe. I tried to pull out all of the stops. These Rice Krispy treats replace the normal melted butter with a much more flavorful brown butter. To give them a smooth (but still crunchy) consistency, I included a little bit of white chocolate to the melted marshmallows. And then, to top it off, some rainbow sprinkles as a reminder to not take things so seriously!

Why You Will Love This Recipe
- Texture- Realize it or not, Rice Krispy Treats live or die by the texture. Too crunchy and it becomes a war between the cereal and the roof of your mouth, too gooey and they are impossible to eat. These are the perfect ration and the white chocolate just brings it to the next level.
- Easy to make- These are the easiest desserts to make with your kids, and they are so good, your whole family will fall in love with them.
- Fresh take on a classic treat- This is the perfect mix between classic crispy treats and fun new experience.
- Gooey Marshmallows- I think I forgot how much I love melted marshmallows. And the white chocolate addition just makes them unreal.
Pantry Essentials – Sprinkle Rice Krispy Treats
This is not the ingredient list, but just a list of things I think every pantry needs! For the full recipe, check out the recipe card at the bottom!
- Rainbow Sprinkles- You need these always.
- White Chocolate- You can either use white chocolate chips or you can opt for the white chocolate bark. Either will work for this recipe.
- Fresh Marshmallows– If your marshmallows could be used in a sling to kill Goliath, than your marshmallows need to be replaced.
- Unsalted Butter- Salted butter steals the joy I get from sprinkling salt on things like the 2017 internet sensation Salt Bae.
- Vanilla Extract– My favorite brand is Neilsen-Massey. It is high quality for an affordable price
- Parchment Paper– I use parchment paper multiple times a day. From baking Sprinkle Rice Krispie treats to oven roasting vegetables, it is a necessity.
STEP BY STEP – Sprinkle Rice Krispy Treats
What to know how to make these Sprinkle Rice Krispy Treats? Well here is the shorten steps, for a list of the full instruction, check out the recipe card below!
- Prep the Pan: First up, grab a 9×13 inch baking pan and line the bottom of the pan with parchment paper. Give it a quick spray to make sure nothing sticks.
- Brown That Butter: In a big saucepan over medium heat, melt your butter. Keep an eye on it and swirl it around every now and then. When it starts to turn a gorgeous golden brown and smells all nutty, you’re good to go!
- Get Marshmallowy: Toss those mini marshmallows into the saucepan with the browned butter. Keep stirring until they’re all melted and mixed up with that yummy butter.
- Mix It Up: Take the saucepan off the heat and dump in your crispy rice cereal. Give it all a good stir until everything’s coated in that marshmallowy goodness. Let it sit for a minute to soak up all the flavor.
- Add Some Fun: Now it’s time to make these treats extra special! Gently fold in some rainbow sprinkles, white chocolate chips, and a handful of mini marshmallows. Don’t go crazy stirring, though—you want those sprinkles to keep their color.
- Spread and Press: Transfer your mixture into the prepared baking dish. Use a greased spatula or your greased-up hands to press it all down firmly and evenly.
- Dress It Up: Sprinkle a few more sprinkles, white chocolate chips, and mini marshmallows on top for a little extra pizzazz.
- Cool Down: Let your treats cool completely at room temperature. This is the hardest part because they smell so good, but trust me, it’s worth the wait!
Expert Baking Tips – Sprinkle Rice Krispy Treats
A little stress to make this Sprinkle Rice Krispy Treats? I have you covered with all the tips and tricks!
- Use Fresh Marshmallows: Fresh marshmallows melt more evenly and create a smoother texture in your treats. If your marshmallows are stale, your treats might end up a bit tough.
- Don’t Rush the Browning: When browning the butter, it’s essential to keep an eye on it and stir it occasionally. Browning butter requires patience; rushing it can lead to burning, which will result in a bitter taste.
- Watch for the Golden Color and Nutty Aroma: The butter will start to turn a golden brown color and emit a nutty aroma when it’s properly browned. This is the stage you’re aiming for to achieve that rich, caramelized flavor.
- Use Low to Medium-Low Heat: Browning butter over low to medium-low heat helps control the process and prevents it from burning too quickly. It might take a bit longer, but the results will be worth it.
- Prep Your Ingredients Beforehand: Measure out all your ingredients and have them ready to go before you start browning the butter. Once the butter is browned, things move quickly, so having everything prepared will make the process smoother.
- Don’t Overmix: When adding the mix-ins to the cereal and marshmallow mixture, gently fold them in just until evenly distributed. Overmixing can cause the sprinkles to bleed their color or the treats to become tough.
- Grease Everything: To prevent sticking, grease both the saucepan and your spatula or hands when working with the marshmallow mixture. This will make it easier to transfer and press the mixture into the baking dish.
- Let Them Cool Completely: Allow the treats to cool completely at room temperature before cutting into squares. This helps them set properly and ensures they hold their shape when sliced.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use salted butter instead of unsalted butter?
Yes, you can use salted butter if that’s what you have on hand. Just be mindful of the salt content in the butter and adjust the amount of added salt accordingly.
Can I skip browning the butter?
Browning the butter adds a rich, nutty flavor to the treats, but you can skip this step if you prefer. However, your treats won’t have the same depth of flavor.
How can I prevent the sprinkles from bleeding their color?
To prevent the sprinkles from bleeding, gently fold them into the mixture rather than stirring vigorously. This will help keep their colors intact.
How long do the treats need to cool before cutting?
I only waited 5 minutes because I can’t help myself!
Storing and Freezing
To store Sprinkle Rice Krispy Treats, place them in an airtight container or wrap in plastic wrap, at room temperature. Avoid stacking them too tightly to prevent them from becoming overly compressed. Enjoy within 2-3 days for the best texture and flavor.
Freezing – Sprinkle Rice Krispy Treats
I recommend not freezing Sprinkle Rice Krispy Treats! The marshmallow will become way to stiff!

- 1 ½ package about 15 oz mini marshmallows, plus some for a garnish
- 8 cups crispy rice cereal like Rice Krispies
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ cup rainbow sprinkles
- ¾ white chocolate chips
- Handful of mini marshmallows
Instructions
- Line and spray a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper. Set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Cook the butter, swirling occasionally, until it turns a golden brown color and gives off a nutty aroma, about 5-7 minutes. Be careful not to let it burn.
- Once the butter is browned, add the marshmallows to the saucepan. Stir constantly until the marshmallows are completely melted and well combined with the brown butter. Add the vanilla and mix.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and quickly stir in the crispy rice cereal until it’s evenly coated with the marshmallow mixture. Let it sit for 1 minute, and then gently fold in the chocolate chips, sprinkles, and mini marshmallows.
